INTRODUCTION

Concerned with the increasing loss of knowledge through the retirement of many of the experts in the field of water, the International Water Association (IWA) created the IWA Young Water Professionals Program to provide mechanisms to ensure that knowledge is not lost upon the retirement of personnel. This Program provides a range of activities, services and initiatives to young professionals and students in the water and wastewater sector under the age of 35 and also connects with employers, academic institutions and other professional associations to ensure that the future needs of the sector are understood and addressed and inter-generational dialogue is created to form links between senior professionals of the sector and young professionals.

Following the spirit of this program, Mexico is organizing the First National Young Water Professionals Conference, with the aim of gathering post grade students (Master and Doctorate), young researchers, and professionals in the field of water and wastewater research, technology and management, to present their work and have the opportunity to exchange ideas with their peers from all over the country. This conference will also be an opportunity for the author of the best paper to be awarded with support in lodgement and registration to attend, as representative of Mexico, the 4th IWA Young Water Professionals International Conference, to be held in Berkeley, USA, on July 16-18, 2008.
